Max (Walter Matthau) and John (Jack Lemmon) are best friends that have a love-hate relationship dating back to when they were young. As next door neighbors, they take full advantage of being close in order to play tricks and spy on each other trying to make sure neither gets "one up". After losing the hand of a beautiful new neighbor to John, Max finds himself still lonely and grumpy. When Maria Raghetti (Sophia Loren) buys the local bait shack, the boys consider it war to attempt to keep the bait shack and their lives just the way they are. But there is something about this firey Italian lady that catches Max's eye. If they can stand each other's company for more than a few moments, perhaps they will discover love, even at an advanced age.
