The Day After portrays the events of a nuclear war between the United States and the Soviet Union in the mid 80s. The story begins when the Soviet Union, after a period of military build-up, invades West Germany. Instead of showing the impact that the subsequent events have on a global scale, the film instead focuses on the small town of Lawrence, Kansas - a town located near to numerous nuclear missile silos. The plot unfolds via news on television and radio, and we see its effects on the normal people of the town, including Dr. Oakes (Jason Robards) who works at the small local hospital. When missiles strike nearby Kansas City, the townspeople wake up to face the grim reality of The Day After.
