In this sequel, Dr. John Doolittle (Eddie Murphy) still works with animals, using his unique ability to communicate directly with them. He has taken his wife Lisa (Kristen Wilson), older daughter Charisse (Raven-Symoné), and younger daughter Maya (Kyla Pratt) to a cabin in the woods, so they can enjoy the splendor of nature together as a family. Doolittle and their dog, Lucky (Norm MacDonald) soon discover that the animals of the forest are in danger of being displaced by developers. Doolittle forms a plan to create a population of an endangered species within the forest, which will save the land from the development plans. Dr. Doolittle soon finds just the right animal, a female Pacific Western bear who calls herself Ava (Lisa Kudrow). She is being wooed by a bear from another, non-endangered species, so Doolittle must quickly find a male Pacific Western bear and introduce the two in order to bring his plan to fruition. He locates Archie (Steve Zahn), a bear raised in captivity and trained to perform circus tricks, and Doolittle's task is clear. He must teach Archie the natural ways of his species, in order to win the hand of fair Ava.
