Michael Donovan (John Wayne) and Dr. William Dedham (Jack Warden) are United States Navy men living on an island in the Pacific. The men had settled there after fighting to free the island from the Japanese in World War 2. Dr. Dedham's daughter Amelia (Elizabeth Allen) arrives at the island while her father is away on business, and meet Donovan. Knowing Amelia has never met her father, and had not heard he had three children from an island girl, Donovan pretend the children are his own and presents himself as a bit of a scoundrel as he squires Amelia around the island. Amelia confides she is visiting her father to see if he is of "good character" as a relative died and the good doctor is set to receive a considerable inheritance. A romance follows as Donovan shows Amelia the good her estranged father has accomplished on the item, and though their is a lot of argument and fighting, she stubbornly accepts her father and Donovan on their own terms.
