Gunslinger Cole Thornton (John Wayne) becomes embroiled in a ranch war around the town of El Dorado. Thornton refuses to work as a henchman for ruthless local rancher Bart Jason as he would come into conflict with his friend J. P. Harrah (Robert Mitchum) the local Sheriff. Thornton returns to El Dorado some months later to find the ranch war heating up and Sheriff Harrah an alcoholic. With the help of a young man nicknamed Mississippi (James Caan) and a grizzled old deputy named Bull, Thornton must sober up his friend and bring Jason and his gang to justice.
