Victor Maynard (Bill Nighy) is a lonely, ageing killer-for-hire, henpecked by his domineering mother Louisa (Eileen Atkins). He is contracted to kill a young compulsive female thief, Rose (Emily Blunt) but finds himself unable to go through with it. He becomes her protector, accidentally taking on a young apprentice, Tony (Rupert Grint) in the process. The two youngsters believe him to be a private detective as he tries to keep them from harm.
