Phil Connors (Bill Murray) is a weather man with a big head, and he is not too happy when he gets sent to Punxsutawney to cover Groundhog's Day. His producer Rita (Andie MacDowell) and cameraman Larry (Chris Elliott) are much happier, but neither of them really likes Phil. It seems as though they are going to be there and gone, until a big winter storm blows in, sending them back to Punxsutawney for another night. When Phil wakes up the next morning he gets an uncanny sense of deja vu when the same song is playing on the radio as the morning before. He soon discovers that he has somehow become stuck in the same day and no matter what he does he can't seem to escape it. First he uses the repetition of the day to have some good fun, then he tries every way he can think of to kill himself, always waking up the next morning. Eventually he starts to learn some things about what is really important in life such as love and friendship, but will he be able to keep these things, or will he just wake up to another Groundhog's Day?
