Doris Walker (Maureen O'Hara) is a bitter, divorced woman with a little girl, Susan (Natalie Wood). She works at Macy's. She is disillusioned and teaches Susan not to believe in imaginary things, like Santa Claus. She meets a man calling himself Kris Kringle (Edmund Gwenn) and hires him to be Macy's Santa. Kris, who claims he really is Santa Claus, is not the normal department store Santa. He actually advises customers to go to other stores where items are cheaper. Management loves him. Kris and the Walker's neighbor Fred Gailey (John Payne) encourage imagination in Susan, and she begins to hope that she'll get her dream house from Santa this year. Although Doris initially feels Kris is crazy, he eventually wins everyone over. Everyone, that is, except Mr. Sawyer (Porter Hall) who works to get Kris arrested for fraud. Fred represents Kris and becomes discouraged that he has failed. However, when the U. S. Post Office sends tons of mail addressed to Santa Claus to Kris, the court rules that he really is Santa Claus.
