Orphaned Pollyanna Whittier (Hayley Mills) goes to live with her wealthy Aunt Polly Harrington(Jane Wyman). Aunt Polly is a self-centered, controlling woman who only takes Pollyanna out of a sense of duty. Pollyanna, though, is a sunny, happy child who makes the best of everything by playing “the glad game”. She goes about making life a better place for everyone around her. From the household employees to an orphan boy to a bitter, bedridden woman, they all fall under Pollyanna’s spell. Pollyanna is shocked, though, by the sermons of fire and brimstone her aunt demands the pastor deliver each Sunday. Her own father had been a minister who preferred the “glad texts”. Under her influence, the pastor finds the courage to preach a happy sermon and endorse a church bizarre, bringing the town together against the wishes of Polly Harrington. Pollyanna is forbidden to attend the bizarre. Her orphan friend, Jimmy (Kevin Corcoran) talks her into climbing down a tree with him to go to the bizarre. She does and has a wonderful time. Climbing back up the tree, however, Pollyanna falls and damages her spine. With her legs paralyzed, she despairs until the town rallies to her support.
