Professor Oliver Lindenbrook (James Mason) and his pupil, Alec McKuen (Pat Boone) have found evidence, left by a previous explorer, of a pathway down an old volcano in Iceland that will take them to the center of the earth. They ask a colleague for assistance, but find him dead. The dead professor had been planning to make the trek before them so that he could claim the discovery for himself. In the dead professor’s room, they find all of the gear and information they need to make the journey. The dead professor’s widow, Carla Gotenborg (Arlene Dahl), convinces the pair to take her and local Icelander Hans Belker (Peter Ronson) along on the journey. As they descend deeper towards the Earth’s core, they run across geological wonders, long extinct creatures and even hints of an ancient civilization. However, before they be famous for their discoveries, they have to find a way home.
