Cross country races are illegal and sometimes quite dangerous, but that doesn't stop J.J. McClure (Burt Reynolds), a washed up race car drive and his mechanic, Victor Primzin (Dom DeLuise) from participating. The goal is to the be the first team that makes it across the country, checking in at various checkpoints, outwitting your opponents, and all the crazy people you meet on the road. Law enforcement is aware of such races and wants nothing more than to shut them down, so not only are the participants forced to out think each other, but they must also do whatever it takes to outwit the police. Finding the right combination of costume and strategy leads to all sorts of situations that J.J. and Victor must resolve so they can win the race.
