Nick Arden (Cary Grant) has just married Bianca (Gail Patrick), his second wife. Nick's first wife Ellen Arden (Irene Dunne) was lost at sea seven years ago and he has just been able to have her declared officially dead. However unknown to him, she is not dead and on the day of his second marriage reappears on the scene after being rescued. Nick needs to break the news to Bianca, but complicating the situation is the fact that Ellen has been living alone on a desert island for seven years with Stephen Burkett (Randolph Scott). How can Nick tell Bianca that Ellen isn't dead? Will Ellen convince Nick that her time on the island with Burkett was innocent? Will Burkett be able to convince Ellen to leave Nick for him? Most importantly which wife will Nick decide is his favorite?
